PVC Pipe and Mainline Repair

Expose and repair a cracked lateral or a pressurised mainline, then pressure test before the trench is closed.

Mainline or lateral decides the urgency

Irrigation piping comes in two kinds. The mainline runs from the supply connection to the zone valves and is pressurised day and night, so a break there loses water around the clock and can undermine a slab, a wall footing or a walk. Laterals run from each valve to its heads or drip tubing and only carry water while that station runs, so a lateral break wastes water on schedule and shows as weak heads and a wet patch during the cycle.

Telling them apart is the first step. If the meter moves with the system idle and every station shut, the mainline or a valve is the suspect. If the ground is only wet after one station runs, the lateral on that station is. Turning off the irrigation supply, where a separate shutoff exists, contains a mainline leak while the repair is planned.

Many Sun City systems are as old as the houses, built from 1960 through the late 1970s according to the museum's history series, so PVC and fittings may be decades into service when a break appears.

How a pipe repair is done properly

The repair opens a hole large enough to work in and to see the pipe either side of the break. Damaged PVC is cut back to sound pipe, and the joint is rebuilt with fittings of the correct pressure class, cleaned and primed, then cemented and allowed to set before pressure goes back on. Roots that crushed or lifted a line are cleared or the line is rerouted, and pipe that lay on rock is bedded so the same edge does not crack it again.

Before backfill, the line is pressurised and watched for weeping at every new joint. Grit that entered the pipe during the repair is flushed out through the heads or line ends so it does not lodge in a valve or emitter downstream. EPA WaterSense asks homeowners to confirm that every component is securely connected; rechecking the meter with the system idle is the simplest proof that the repair holds. Finding the break comes first under irrigation leak detection.

Questions about PVC Pipe and Mainline Repair

Yes. The mainline stays under pressure all the time, so a break loses water around the clock and can undermine paving or footings. A lateral only carries water while its station runs. If the meter moves with the system idle, suspect the mainline or a valve and shut off the irrigation supply.
